About Waves NC

Making your way south through the Outer Banks, you'll pass through Rodanthe before getting to Waves. This small, unincorporated community is part of the Tri-Villages area of Hatteras Island, which also includes Rodanthe and Salvo. Named for the open beaches and abundant waves crashing onto the shore from the Atlantic Ocean, this community is a brilliant place to spend your Outer Banks vacation when you're looking for an out-of-the-way place that offers close proximity to the restaurants and sightseeing opportunities of the larger Outer Banks towns while still enjoying the peace and quiet of an untouched Hatteras Island oasis.

HISTORY OF Waves, NC

Located on Hatteras Island in the southern Outer Banks, Waves is a small, historic town that was once part of an area known as "Chicamacomico," which also included Rodanthe and Salvo. The name "Waves" was given to the village in 1939 when the first post office was opened in the area. Beginning in the 1960s, this area of Hatteras Island became a hotspot for surfing and in 1971, the Hatteras Island Surf Shop opened, creating a haven for surfers in the area and stocking supplies to keep this hobby going.
