Pickleball is rapidly gaining popularity among vacationers in the Outer Banks (OBX), offering a dynamic and engaging way to stay active. This comprehensive guide will cover everything you need to know about playing pickleball on the OBX, from understanding the basics to finding the best places to play, ensuring a fun-filled experience for all ages and skill levels.

What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a rapidly growing sport in the US that combines tennis, badminton, and ping-pong into a fast-paced sport that is accessible to people of all ages. The sport itself requires 2-4 players and can either be played on a specific pickleball court or a tennis court, making it easy to adapt any space for the game. Pickleball courts are usually 20ft by 44ft and play requires a paddle (usually made of wood or plastic) and a ball with holes that is more like a wiffle ball than a tennis ball.

The actual rules of pickleball are pretty simple and are similar to ping pong, so it's an easy sport to pick up while on vacation to stay active and enjoy the fresh ocean air! It's also a great social activity that's perfect for bonding with the family while keeping you active and healthy. And with its growing expansion around the country, it's an easily transferable sport wherever you are in the US!

Check out USA Pickleball for additional rules, tips, and strategies to bring your A-game to your next match!

Getting Started with Pickleball

One of the best things about pickleball is its accessibility and how easy it is to get started! Whether you're playing away from home for the first time or you're looking to pick up a new hobby during your vacation, there are a few things to keep in mind. From gear to the best clothes to wear, here are some of our suggestions for getting started with pickleball and getting the most out of your game.

Basic Equipment

To start playing pickleball, there are a few essential things that you're going to need:

Paddle

A pickleball paddle is lighter than a tennis racket but larger than a ping pong paddle. Paddles can come in different materials depending on personal preference, skill level, and playing style. Composite paddles are the most versatile and great for beginners, but you may want to consider different materials, lengths, and shape based on your preferences. Take a look at a guide like this to help you make the right decision for your game.

Balls

Pickleball does require a specific ball that is lightweight and has holes, similar to a wiffle ball. Players do use a different type of ball depending on whether you're playing indoors or outdoors, so that's something to consider when purchasing gear. Outdoor balls tend to be a little bit heaver and are made to be durable. You can find out more about the differences between indoor and outdoor balls here

Court Specifications

In general, pickleball courts are smaller than tennis courts. Tennis courts are usually 78' by 27' while pickleball courts are 20' by 44.' There are also specific markings on the court for non-volley zones and service areas. That being said, it's possible to play pickleball on a tennis court, the game will just need to be adjusted to the larger size.

Getting Equipment on the OBX

Here on the Outer Banks, there are plenty of local sporting goods stores that are perfect for picking up some pickleball gear. Kitty Hawk Kites is always a good option to find paddles, balls, and other accessories or you can check out larger stores like Walmart, Target, and Ace Hardware.

Recommended Attire

Proper attire is key to comfort and safety while playing pickleball:

Breathable Clothing

The Outer Banks has a temperate climate with mild winters, pleasant springs and falls, and generally hot and humid summers, so be sure to wear breathable clothing when playing. Opt for layers when possible and choose moisture-wicking materials that will give you freedom of movement no matter the weather. Athletic shorts, tank tops, or breathable t-shirts are ideal most of the year while thin, long-sleeve shirts can work with the wind and in the colder months.

Non-Marking Shoes

Be sure to wear athletic shoes or shoes specifically made for courts to avoid damaging the court surface. Consider grip, arch support, and cushioning when deciding which shoes to wear.

Accessories

You're certainly going to want to consider sun protection when playing outside on the Outer Banks! Don't forget a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen so that you can keep playing while staying cool in the heat. Water, portable fans, and cooling towels are also great for extending playtime!

Tips for Beginners

Getting started with pickleball is easy, but mastering the game takes time and practice. Here are a few tips for beginners:

Learn the Rules First

While pickleball is definitely an easy game to pick up, it's just like any other sport in that you MUST understand the rules and basic gameplay, as well as the scoring system, before getting started. You can play in doubles or singles depending on the size of your group. Check out USA Pickleball for the rules. They also include visuals to help make things clearer and get you out on the court faster. Consider keeping this up on your phone in case there are any discrepancies while playing.

Start Simple

When practicing, don't feel like you have to jump right into a game or complicated routines. Begin with the basic drills to get a handle on the paddle, footwork, and the flow of the court and the game. Repetition is key, so be sure to practice groundstrikes, services, dinking, and volleys whenever you can. Check out PaddleTek for some drill ideas.
